Meta Tags

Now that you have your website set up, you probably want people to see what you've created. This page explains one of the fundamental steps of Search Engine Optimization, meta tags.

Meta tags allow search engines such as Google to understand what your website is about.  You make meta tags, which are keywords or phrases you type that represent the content on your website.  For beginning websites with little traffic, it is important to pick tags that accurately represent the purpose of the site.

When you are first beginning and don't have many visitors, it is important to use keywords that AREN'T too competitive.  Because you are just starting out, you probably don't have as much content to prove to major search engines (Google and Bing primarily) that your website is more relevant than more established websites to viewers searching a keyword.

The competitivness of a keyword can easily be found using keyword popularity tools.  For a complete guide on keyword popularity tools, check out this page by backlinko.com. These tools will help you find keywords which will rank your website high when searched (because few people go past the first page of Google).  To find the right key phrases, use these tips:

  • Look at your content and think of long phrases that you use in your website's content (instead of "science", try "astrophotography using Meade LX 200 Telescope")
  • Use phrases that are repeatedly used during your title, subtitle, and in your body paragraphs
  • Make sure you look up the competitiveness of your keywords or phrases
  • Add valuable content for visitors that pertains to your keywords (often, the more focused the keywords are the better)

To put a meta tag into your website on Weebly , you will need to go to the "Settings" tab.  After clicking on it, you will then go to the SEO option on the left of the page.  Lastly, you will see a box that says "Meta Keywords."  This is where you will type in your keywords separated by commas.  Look at the example below for an idea of how this works for keywords and phrases.

Keywords and phrases should have no space after commas.
