Search Engine Optimization
When you Google a topic, Google takes the words you type and compares them with words as well as keywords (which we will discuss in a minute) to rank what they think the best websites and blogs will be for you. To make your website rank higher when somebody googles your website, you will add keywords to your website. By adding keywords that appear a lot on your website, you strengthen your rankings. The more content you have with the certain keywords that you put in your keywords part of your website, the more people will show up, because when they type in one of your keywords your site will have a higher ranking and be more likely to be found.
Now, I will show you how to add keywords as well as what keywords to add on a Weebly website. On Weebly websites there are a few quick steps to adding keywords to your website. First, you will start out by going to the editing version of your website. Next, you will need to click on the Settings option at the very top of the page. This will have a blue background and be in white lettering. After clicking on the Settings button, you will go to the SEO option as shown in this picture right under the red box with "General" inside it. After clicking on SEO, you will scroll to the top of this subpage and see an empty box with the words "Meta Keywords" above it. This will be where you will enter your keywords.
To choose your keywords, you should think of words that you repeat throughout your website frequently. For beginning websites, it is important, however, that you use keywords that aren't competitive. To see how competitive a keyword is, click here. Also, make sure that your keywords and keyword phrases are used somewhere in your website. If you put keywords in this section that don't appear in your content, then search engines such as Google will ignore them. It is best if you use your keywords frequently as well as in different sections of your website (in the title, subtitle, and body) When you type your keywords into the Meta Keywords box as pictured below, you will need to separate each keyword with just a comma. After typing all of your keywords each separated by commas, click the save button to save your keywords.
If you looked at some of the other options in the picture above under the SEO section you will see other boxes that are empty for you to fill such as the Footer Code, Header Code, and Site Description boxes. We will now go over each of these.
To start, I will discuss the first box, the Site Description. This box gives a summary of what your website is about. Type in what you think gives search engines such as Bing and Google a detailed description of your website. In this detailed description you should include some of your keywords that we discussed above to improve your ranking. In this detailed description, be sure to be very clear in as few words as possible to explain, using keywords, what users will see on your website and what it can be used for. This description that you provide may be used when Google is giving a summary of your site below your title in their search engine, so it is important that you can catch your potential site viewer's attention in as few words as possible.
